Local Government—Electoral cycle
880. Hon Simon Ehrenfeld to the minister
representing the Minister for Local Government:
I refer to the
minister's comments reported in The West
Australian on 30 June 2025 indicating that she is in early talks to
replace the current two-year rolling council election cycle with a single
four-year term to deal with voter fatigue and give potential elected members
more opportunity to pursue their plans.
(1) Can the minister confirm whether the intention
of the government is that councillors elected this Saturday will serve a full
four-year term?
(2) Is there a possibility the terms of
councillors elected this Saturday will be shortened to two years?
(3) Has the government commissioned or drafted
legislation to introduce this reform and, if so, when will it be presented to
the Parliament?
