I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The acting director general of the Department of Health is currently discussing with senior staff changes to the structure of that division. These changes were initiated by the 2004 report of the Health Reform Committee and the government’s pre-election statement “Labor’s plan to promote good health”. A final decision on its structure and the allocation of functions has yet to be made. Any changes will need to be consistent with the report of the Health Reform Committee and government policy. (2) The changes currently under discussion are intended to broaden the focus on the prevention of illness and injury from a single division of the department across all policy and program areas. In this way the commitment to prevention will be not only maintained but also substantially increased and included in all aspects of the health system.
