NATIONAL HOCKEY PROGRAM
I remind the minister to take plenty of food to the grand final, because there will be no Pies in the grand final! Can the minister please advise the house of the state government’s position on the move to take the national hockey program away from Western Australia? Mr J.C. KOBELKE

I thank the member or Albany for his question and his interest in sport. One finds it very difficult to understand why the member for Albany would back the Pies when he has such sporting prowess himself, but anyway, to each his own! On a more serious issue, before I comment on the football, the Hockey Australia high performance program has been hosted by Perth since 1984. This has led to the outstanding success of the Hockeyroos and the Kookaburras. These teams have been pre-eminent in Australia, and internationally, over a long period. They have won gold medals at Olympic level and at world championships. They have been a flagship for sport in Australia, particularly hockey. The funding from Hockey Australia is for a four-year period. With the Beijing Olympics about to come up, the commonwealth is looking at who will be given the funding from Hockey Australia for the ongoing national hockey program that is run by the Australian Institute of Sport. A working group chaired by Neil McKerracher, QC has been working on that and has put together a fantastic submission. This government is very happy to support that submission fully. We have supported it financially by indicating that if the program continues in Perth, as we want it to, we will fund an athlete recovery facility, and also refurbish the office available to that program at Curtin. We will also provide an ongoing subsidy for athletes because of the higher cost of travel from Perth to other places around Australia and the world. We have been doing that, and we will continue to do that. We have also indicated that the funding for the playing surface upgrade will be met by funding from the Department of Sport and Recreation. We have fully supported that. We hope that will continue for another 16 years in Perth - that is what the bid is for - and that hockey will continue to go from strength to strength as a national program that is hosted in Perth. The decision to be made by Hockey Australia will be made early in 2007. In closing, another matter that is about to be decided is the grand final this Saturday. Along with many hundreds of thousands of Eagles supporters and many members in this chamber, I wish John Worsfold and the team, and all the supporters, the very best for Saturday. It is likely to be a very tight tussle. The recent encounters between the Sydney Swans and the West Coast Eagles have been very tight. This being a grand final, and knowing that the Eagles have been working towards this all year, we trust they will come home victorious and again bring the premiership back to Western Australia.
