REGIONAL AIR SERVICES, PREMIER’S ACTION
Given the Premier’s disagreement with the federal Leader of the Opposition, who has said that he will ensure regional air services in the face of the collapse of Ansett Australia and its associated airlines, and given the Premier’s role as chair of the cabinet regional subcommittee, what steps has the Premier taken, other than discussions with Qantas Airways Ltd, to ensure that air services are immediately re-established to meet the business, health and other essential needs of regional Western Australia? Dr GALLOP

I do not know whether the Leader of the National Party was listening, but I indicated that all of the routes that had been met by Skywest Airlines Pty Ltd and Ansett have been filled by Qantas, with the exception of the link between Broome and Derby. It is in there doing that work. There is no disagreement between me and the federal Leader of the Opposition, because we are ensuring that services are available in Western Australia. In fact, there are many strategic issues that we will need to address in the medium to long term, as well as in the short term, to ensure that is the case. It is very important that in Western Australia today we do not talk down our tourism industry. That is exactly what we are hearing from members opposite. There are people in Western Australia - Mr Graham interjected. The SPEAKER: I call to order the member for Pilbara for the first time. Dr GALLOP replied: People in Western Australia are watching the news and planning their holidays. We want those people to travel by plane in Western Australia and enjoy our tourist assets. Mr Cowan interjected. Dr GALLOP: That is simply not true. The Minister for Planning and Infrastructure’s office and my office have been in constant dialogue with the administrator, who has responsibility for those assets. We want to ensure that the interests of Western Australia are well understood. I do not understand the position of members opposite on a range of issues. They are telling us we need to cut taxes and at the same time to increase expenditure in the budget. That is not possible. Mr Barnett: You are waffling. Dr GALLOP: I am not waffling at all. Is the Leader of the Opposition against Skywest Airlines Pty Ltd being underwritten by the Government so that it can operate again? Mr Barnett: I have not said that. Dr GALLOP: The Leader of the Opposition was quoted as saying that he was against it. Is he in favour of it? Mr Barnett: I am against a bail out. They are different things. Dr GALLOP: He is against a bail out. The State Government will be responsible about the way it spends taxpayers’ money. It will not make knee-jerk reactions to situations. We will build on what is available until a regional air service is available throughout Western Australia. A service is being provided by Qantas Airways Ltd. It is extraordinary for members to talk down that service and create the impression among many Western Australians that they should not travel in Western Australia. Mr Barnett interjected. Dr GALLOP: Hollywood has Forrest Gump and Western Australia has Forrest Grump. The attitude of the Leader of the Opposition is negative, negative, negative. Mr Barnett interjected. Dr GALLOP: If the Leader of the Opposition wants to talk about parties, he should talk about the Western Australian Tourism Commission under his Government. Does he want to talk about tea sets? Let us get serious about this issue. The Government of Western Australia has ensured - in accordance with an undertaking by the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure when Ansett collapsed - that an air service is in place. We should not talk down the tourist industry in Western Australia.

Dr GALLOP replied: I do not know whether the Leader of the National Party was listening, but I indicated that all of the routes that had been met by Skywest Airlines Pty Ltd and Ansett have been filled by Qantas, with the exception of the link between Broome and Derby.
