The WA government reviewed Royalties for Regions (RfR) funded projects, resulting in the removal of funding for the Laverton Hospital upgrade in the 2017/18 budget due to a lack of formal approval and current Memorandums of Understanding. The government is reassessing infrastructure needs and exploring alternative funding options.

(a) The Government has undertaken a review of all Royalties for Regions (RfR) funded projects which did not have current Memorandums of Understanding in place between the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and the relevant agencies in receipt of RfR funding. The Laverton Hospital was a project reviewed under these arrangements. While it is recognised that Laverton is an ageing facility in need of significant infrastructure upgrades to better support the delivery of contemporary models of care, construction on this project had not yet commenced and the business case for this project was never formally approved by the previous Government. Funding was removed from the budget forward estimates for this project in the 2017/18 budget as a result of the Royalties for Regions review. The Minister for Health has requested the WA Country Health Service take a fresh look at country infrastructure needs for consideration in future budget rounds, starting with those projects that missed out on funding in the 2017/18 budget. It is understood that the Minister for Regional Development is also in discussions with the Shire of Laverton as to whether or not some of the funding allocated for the community hub could be redirected to the hospital. Work will continue between the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and the WA Country Health Service to prioritise potential future priority investment initiatives with the Laverton Hospital to be considered in this context. (b) Business Case and Planning expenditure to 30 June 2017 was $282,786. (c) – (f) Refer to (a).
