I refer to the Premier’s statements that the James Price Point site proposed for a LNG hub is, ‘not the spectacular part of the Kimberley coast’, that the public cares about, and that the Premier, ‘will do all [he] can to ensure the Kimberley is protected - totally protected’, (Walmadany music concert, Broome, 27 March 2009), and I ask -
(1) How will the Government totally protect the Kimberley including its coastline?
(2) Will the Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy announced by the Government be the mechanism by which the Kimberley including its coastline is totally protected?
(3) If yes to (2), how will the map released by the Minister for Environment (that identifies only four small marine areas and no terrestrial areas as possible new conservation areas in the Kimberley) advance the total protection of the Kimberley including its coastline?
(4) Is the Premier aware of the many longstanding scientifically based recommendations for additional marine and terrestrial conservation reserves in the Kimberley, for example the recommendations of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) (as it then was) and the Marine Parks and Reserves Authority in the early 1990s?
(5) If yes to (4) -
(a) what is the Government’s position on those recommendations; and
(b) how does the Government reconcile those recommendations with the proposals made by the Minister for Environment?

(1-2) The development of the Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy will outline the State Government's approach for protecting the region's natural and cultural values while its economic potential is fulfilled and include a focus on:
· The high value natural and cultural areas deserving of enhanced protection.
· Practical initiatives that assist in preserving the region's ecological integrity.
· Priorities for further scientific research in the Kimberley.
· Opportunities to further engage indigenous people in conservation work and joint management of conservation areas.
(3) The two maps I released were part of a consultative process for developing the Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy. The maps show parks and reserves vested with the Conservation Commission of Western Australia and marine areas of conservation interest respectively, and were provided as a basis for stimulating public consideration of conservation in the Kimberley. They were indicative only, and do not constitute formal proposals. Comments made by the public and stakeholders in written submissions and community forums will be considered in preparing the Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy.
(4-5) These questions should be referred to the Premier.
