(b) Albany Highway (total length 404 km), 34 overtaking lanes. (c) South Western Highway (total length 514 km), 36 overtaking lanes. (d) Great Northern Highway (total length 3295 km), 10 overtaking lanes. (2) The provision of overtaking lanes is not governed by specific intervals of distance, but by a number of factors including traffic volume, the presence of normal safe passing opportunities resulting from adequate sight distances, the topography of the road, recorded level of hazard and the availability of funding. Funds for overtaking lanes are prioritised with the most hazardous sites being treated first. (3) Yes. (4) Funds have been allocated on Main Roads’ 2003/04 program to construct a new southbound overtaking lane on Brand Highway in the Mid West Region and on South Western Highway northbound (south of Kirup) in the South West Region. Consideration will be given to funding for further overtaking lanes on all of the above Highways as part of the 2004/05 State Budget preparations, with the exception of Great Northern Highway. The construction of 12 overtaking lanes on Great Northern Highway within the Wheatbelt North Region has been proposed, however, this Highway forms part of the National Highway System for which the Federal Government is responsible for allocating funds for construction and maintenance works.
