Given that Western Australia now has more than $140 billion worth of resource projects either committed or under consideration in the next few years, I ask -
(1) Why has the Department reduced the VET full time equivalent (FTE) staff numbers from 746 in the 2008-09 budget to a target of 688 for 2009-10, representing a cut of 58 FTE?
(2) Who is doing the work to inform the Government of how many additional people will need to be training in each occupational grouping, to meet the workforce retirements of the resources sector?
(3) How will these training needs be met given that there has only been an allocation of $47.4 million over three years in the training budget?

(1) This is not correct. The figure 688 refers to FTE within the then Department of Education and Training. The variation is due to a change in the accounting methodology used to allocate FTE across the service functions within the budget statement.
This Government's commitment to education and training is evident as the total FTE for the then Department of Education and Training grew from 31 173 in 2008-09 to a budget target of 31 765 in 2009-10.
(2) The Department of Training and Workforce Development is undertaking the work required to inform the Government of the training requirements to meet the workforce needs of the resources sector.
(3) The $47.4 million referred to relates solely to the additional funding provided in the 2009-10 Budget for the State's Economic Stimulus Package for Training. The 2009-10 Budget also included allocations of $395 million in 2009-10 and $415 million in 2010-11 for contracts and agreements for the delivery of training and employment services.
