BREASTSCREEN WA —
REGIONS
608. Ms M. BEARD to the Minister for Health:
Noting
that it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I refer the minister to her response
to questions in the Legislative Council, which showed that BreastScreen
WA does not service residents in Yalgoo, Pannawonica, Warburton or Coral Bay,
citing their small populations.
(1) Does
excluding these communities meet BreastScreen WA's vision to provide
its service equally to all women in the target age group?
(2) Why are some Western Australian
women not worthy of access to these breast-screening services?

I want to congratulate the member
for her election to this place and for her first question. I am not sure who
wrote that question, but the tone of it was probably not appropriate, given the
topic.
(1)–(2) BreastScreen
WA is a private organisation. It is funded by both the state and federal
governments. Where it provides screening is a question for BreastScreen WA. As
Minister for Health, I answer questions about the state public health service.
BreastScreen WA is a private organisation. We fund it very well and we support the work that it does. I use its services,
as do many members in this chamber. It does incredible work in our
regional communities. I think BreastScreen WA works incredibly hard to fulfil
its commitment to women across Western Australia.
