I thank the member for her question
and her ongoing strong advocacy for her community.
Mr
D.J. Kelly interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Bassendean.
Mr
D.C. NALDER : I note the member for Kingsley's appearance in today's
newspaper announcing the increased shelter at Greenwood train station. I think
this is a great outcome for the community as a result of her hard work and
persistence. Well done.
We made an announcement about trains
on the weekend. Members may remember the government's commitment to a
$244 million investment into new train services. It is not only about building
rail lines; we need to have the infrastructure to go with that to ensure that
the trains run. The government committed $244 million, and we met the halfway
point on the weekend with the delivery of the eleventh train. The other 11 trains
are scheduled to be delivered over the next 12 months. Mr Speaker, this amounts
to a 28 per cent increase in our total railcar fleet. On top of the 22 to 23 per
cent increase in bus kilometres, the bus fleet has grown from 1 095 to 1 400
buses since we came to government. In addition to education, we are also
passionate about public transport.
As part of the 2015–16
budget, we announced an additional $5 million to start planning for additional
railcars for the future. Over 10 years from 2019 through to 2029, the
government of Western Australia plans to purchase an additional 50 six-car rail
sets. These will allow us to plan for further passenger growth and future
expansion of our urban rail network. In addition to new rail sets and new
generation of trains, we will look at what we can add to the services. I have
talked about this before. We want to ensure that we enhance the customer
experience, so people feel that catching public transport is a great
opportunity. We are looking at USB-charging ports and wi-fi and other such
additional services. We believe long-term planning is important. The long-term
plan for this state is to see continued growth in Perth. We expect demand for
public transport to continue, and we are committed to providing that public
transport.
