STUART PHILLIP BUGEJA
661. Mr P.A. KATSAMBANIS to the Attorney General:
I refer to the case of Stuart
Phillip Bugeja, 36, who was convicted yesterday of four counts of indecently
dealing with two girls aged 11 and 12 at a Baldivis park. The incident happened
in January 2017. He was sentenced to a suspended 15-month jail term even though
the sentencing judge, Judge Sweeney, considered him at risk of reoffending.
Given the Premier's repeated claims that the Attorney General is an
activist who would appeal unsatisfactory sentences, is the Attorney General
satisfied with the sentence imposed in this case; or, if not, will he
immediately take all steps necessary to initiate an appeal?

AnswerView source ↗

Thank you for drawing this case to
my attention. The matter of the sentence is open for appeal for 21 days. I will
be taking advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions, who will consider
all of the relevant circumstances of the case and advise me accordingly, and I will
let the member know.
