CANNABIS —
LEGALISATION
1176. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer the minister to a recent
report issued by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
more commonly known as the CDC, which provides compelling evidence that
legalising cannabis does not lead to increased use among teens.
(1) Does the Cook
government wish to reduce teen drug use in general, and teen cannabis use in
particular?
(2) If yes to
(1), will it take on board the research from the CDC and at least consider
legalisation as one productive pathway towards that goal?
(3) If no to (2), why not?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by
the Minister for Police.
As the honourable member has been
previously advised, there are no current plans to make changes to the existing
laws regarding cannabis possession and use in Western Australia.
