The community of Waikiki Gardens near Rockingham will have a new primary school next year.  The temporary school is to be in new homes leased from the Waikiki Gardens Estate.  However, in January this year Minister Carpenter promised that Labor would build a $5.5 million primary school rather than the proposed “school in houses”. (1) Will the Government keep its promise? (2) If yes, when will construction go ahead? (3) Why did the minister promise the primary school if he did not intend to build the school in 2001 - especially knowing the overcrowding at surrounding primary schools? Hon G.T. GIFFARD

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(3) The “school in houses” is an interim school only.  A permanent primary school is planned for construction in Waikiki Gardens when the “school in houses” project shows that the required number of students are present.  The permanent school is currently planned for construction and is expected to open when demand requires.
