(1) Can the minister confirm that the amalgamated Office for Children and Young People’s Policy has been allocated just $4.5 million in last week’s budget, compared with $8 million for the equivalent agencies under the last coalition budget - a reduction of nearly half? (2) Is the minister aware that her decision to slash funding to youth advisory councils directly contradicts her election commitment to listen to young people? (3) Is the minister aware that the whole youth sector supports measures that prevent young people from getting into difficulties; and why is the minister not prepared to support those initiatives? Ms S.M. McHALE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(3) Next week at the Estimates Committees we will go through the budget in detail. My recollection of the amount is that $4.5 million is not correct; it is much higher than that. Opposition members interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, members! Ms S.M. McHALE: This Government recognises that participation and involvement by young people in our community is critical to a healthy community. In relation to the youth advisory councils, this Government is doing things differently from the previous Government. The issues affecting young people revolve around health, education, the environment, youth suicide and participation. I make no apology for the Office of Children and Young People’s Policy. It is not the Office of Youth Affairs with a different name. It has a radically different focus, and we are serious about attacking the issues. Unlike the previous Government that wanted to use the youth affairs portfolio for self-aggrandisement or self-promotion, we are about focusing on health, education, the environment and the voice of young people, and I make no apology for having those as our priorities.
