TOURISM INDUSTRY, RESCUE PACKAGE
I refer to the combined impact on the Australian tourism sector of the tragic events in the United States of America and the unfortunate collapse of Ansett Australia Ltd. (1) When did the Premier last meet with the Western Australian tourism industry to discuss the problems confronting the sector? (2) Is the Government developing a rescue package for the Western Australian tourism industry to help it overcome the current crisis? Dr GALLOP

(1)-(2) As Premier of Western Australia, I am proud to say that we have a first-class Minister for Tourism - he is coming into the Chamber now - who is in constant contact with the tourism industry and advises the Cabinet. A major problem exists in our tourism industry, and the Leader of the Opposition has summarised it well. That problem has been brought about by, on the one hand, the situation that has emerged with international terrorism and its impact on international travel; and, secondly, the collapse of Ansett Australia. This is a problem not only in Western Australia and Australia, but also in North America; and in the news today we heard the announcement of major lay-offs in the American airline industry. It will have an impact on travel in Europe and all over the world. The tourism industry everywhere is under enormous pressure at the moment. In Western Australia, the pressures are starting to show in many centres. The Government has a responsibility to do what it can to assist this industry in this difficult time. As I explained yesterday, some short-term measures need to be taken to instil confidence in Western Australian citizens to travel around the State. We certainly will assist, and some material will come from the Western Australian Tourism Commission on that matter. Mr Barnett: What have you done personally? Dr GALLOP: I have just indicated - Mr Barnett: Have you met with the tourism industry? Dr GALLOP: The Leader of the Opposition’s definition of doing something is meeting with the Western Australian tourism industry. Mr Barnett: Yes - being involved. Dr GALLOP: My definition is keeping in constant contact with my minister, who knows about these things, and doing things. Mr Barnett: You have not been doing anything. Dr GALLOP: The Leader of the Opposition needs to understand that we are in a difficult position in Western Australia. The Leader of the Opposition’s carping criticism has led to the only description that can be given to him, and that is: “carping Colin”. That is the best way we can describe the Leader of the Opposition’s contribution to Western Australia. There is a major crisis in tourism in Western Australia. The Government of Western Australia has some short-term measures to take, as has the Western Australian Tourism Commission. Secondly, the marketplace is very competitive, and we need to find some funds for tourist promotion to ensure we keep our share of that market; and this Government will be doing that. As a Government, we are well aware of the issues, we are very conscious of their impact, and we are very proactive in doing something about these issues.
