Transport—Infrastructure
408. Mr Steve Catania to
the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the Cook Labor government's record
investment in job-creating and economy-driving public transport infrastructure
and services.
(1) Can the minister please outline to the house
how the Cook Labor government is making public transport more accessible and
affordable for Western Australians?
(2) Can the minister advise whether she is aware
of anyone who opposes the government's investment in public transport?

(1)–(2) I thank the member for the
question. We are very proud of the initiatives that we are rolling out across
the state to support new public transport initiatives. The new Midland train
station is going ahead at speed and we look forward to opening it. I know that the
member for Darling Range is very excited about the Byford extension.
Several members
interjected.
Ms Rita Saffioti: I am sorry!
Mr Terry Healy interjected.
Ms Rita Saffioti: Sorry, there are just too many!
Member for
Kimberley, more recently we saw Transperth take over the Broome bus service. We
have seen the incredible results on that bus service already. We are very
excited about our ability to take over that bus service.
We have introduced a
number of new initiatives over recent years. One of the most successful
initiatives has been the purple CAT service into Nedlands. That is why I am
wearing purple today. I was going to wear purple in the lead-up to the next Dockers
final, but, unfortunately, I have had to bring it out for the bus service instead.
The purple CAT service is an initiative that we introduced due to the lobbying
of the former member for Nedlands, who was out there advocating for extra bus
services and making sure that we introduced the purple CAT to deliver students
to the University of Western Australia and, of course, workers, including doctors,
nurses and visitors, to the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre site. I am
surprised—or maybe not surprised—that the new member for
Nedlands does not like public transport much. He does not like the CAT service
that has been delivered into Nedlands. He reckons not enough people use it. He
has said in social media that there are not enough people using it. Is the
member going to cut the purple CAT service? Will he cut the service?
Several members
interjected.
Ms Rita Saffioti: Does the member like it? He said
there are not enough people using it. I will go to the next one, which is, of
course, the expanded ferry service that we know the Liberal Party opposes. Does
the Leader of the Opposition oppose the expanded ferry service? The Messiah of
the Liberal Party is not talking today, members. The self-proclaimed Messiah of
the Liberal Party is not speaking today. We have seen the Liberal Party oppose
the expanded ferry service. I want to give members an insight into the Leader
of the Opposition, who says whatever it takes to get to the next news grab.
When we announced the new ferry service, who was the biggest supporter of it?
It was the Leader of the Opposition, the then Lord Mayor. He said, "I'm
very pleased to see the Premier make this announcement. I have been advocating
on behalf of the city since becoming Lord Mayor for better use of the river."
Now he has the member for Nedlands running a petition to preserve the river—that
is, no ferry service on the river. Who is right on this? Does the member for
Nedlands oppose the ferry service? Does the Leader of the Opposition oppose the
ferry service?
Point of order
Mr Shane Love: We have often been accused of
interjecting, but the minister is actually inviting interjections. Fair go! We
cannot have one rule for us and one rule for them, Mr Speaker.
The Speaker: Thank you, Leader of the National Party.
I will not uphold that point of order. The minister can get on with concluding
her response. That would be appreciated, thank you.
Questions without notice resumed
Ms Rita Saffioti: The self-proclaimed Messiah of the Liberal
Party is not commenting today. That would be a first!
We have an
incredibly bold initiative to expand the ferry service, which is something
people have been calling for forever. The former and current member for South
Perth are big advocates for an expanded ferry service. This is something that
people have been waiting generations for. What do we have? We have a "no-alition"
in place wanting to reject a ferry service into their electorates. They want to
say no to using the river more. Again, the Leader of the Opposition said one
year that it was all his idea and he could not wait for the service to begin
and is now leading a party that is rejecting the ferries to Applecross and
Matilda Bay. On this side, we aim to be consistent and not say one thing to one
community and another thing the next. We are delivering an expanded, affordable public transport service. Once we build the new
ferry system, everyone will be jumping on board, just like Metronet.
