The Minister for the Environment; Science has provided the following response: There are 46 targets for which Western Australia has a direct or shared responsibility. Progress against these is detailed in the paper entitled National Objectives and Targets for Biodiversity Conservation, November 2005 Report . (Please see tabled paper no ) . It needs to be noted that many of the targets deal with issues that by their nature require ongoing action, and that the National Objectives and Targets document recognises that there will be variation across Australia in the timing of the application of the targets. Most progress in the past year has been made in relation to targets 1.2.1, 1.2.3 and 1.3.2, relating to establishment and management of the protected areas system and recovery of threatened species. In particular, the extension of the Ningaloo and Rowley Shoals Marine Parks and establishment of marine reserves at the Montebello Islands, Barrow Island and the Muiron Islands as well as an increase of 568,149 hectares in new terrestrial conservation reserves, including 36 new national parks and nature reserves and 10 new conservation parks in the south-west forests represent significant achievements. (1) Of the 11 targets, 10 have been achieved or largely achieved, and one has been partly achieved. (2) One of the three targets has been largely achieved, and considerable progress has been made on the other two. (3) Five of the 15 targets have been achieved, four have been largely achieved, and six have been partly achieved. (4) The one target is a joint responsibility of the Commonwealth and all States and Territories, and considerable progress has been made. (5) One of the 15 targets has been fully achieved, eight have been largely achieved and six have been partly achieved. One target that has not been allocated to a particular year has also been achieved.
