QuestionView source ↗
(1) Was the minister’s office advised some six months ago of a large grader that had been abandoned in the Murchison River and was said to be causing pollution to the river? (2) What action has the minister’s office taken in respect of this issue? (3) Is the grader still lying in the river? Hon TOM STEPHENS
AnswerView source ↗
I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The minister is aware that the mid west regional office of the Department of Environmental Protection was advised of an abandoned grader in the Murchison River on 28 February 2001. (2) The department was advised by the management at Murchison House Station that the grader was bogged in the riverbed and could not be removed. A machine large enough to remove the grader was not available in the area at the time. The department advised that all fuels and oils were to be removed from the grader to reduce the risk of environmental harm, and that the grader would be removed as soon as a suitable machine was available in the area. (3) The minister has not been advised of the removal of the grader from the river to date. May I further advise the member that I am sufficiently concerned about the information contained in the question and the information provided, that my intention is to immediately raise this issue to ensure that an adequate and appropriate response is embarked upon. Hon N.F. Moore: Is that the one you tried to tow out? Hon TOM STEPHENS: I tried to tow Hon Graeme Campbell’s vehicle out of exactly the same spot, and nearly got expelled from the Labor Party for doing so. I will take the matter up with the minister to ensure that an appropriate response is embarked upon by local or state government.
