I refer to the advertisement in The West Australian today featuring a photograph of the minister presenting the chief executive officer and the staff of the Peel Health Campus, which is in my electorate, with an accreditation certificate from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards. Will the minister inform the House of the significance of accreditation to the Peel Health Campus and what this means for the Peel community? Mr DAY

I thank the member for some notice of this question. I saw that advertisement in this morning’s newspaper. It is a very good photograph, but I know that from the point of view of the member for Dawesville, the only disappointment would be that he does not appear in it as well. Nevertheless, I had the pleasure of visiting the Peel Health Campus last week with the member for Dawesville to present on behalf of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards the three-year accreditation certificate to the Peel Health Campus. It is certainly a credit to all of the staff that this three-year accreditation has been granted. In fact, it is a requirement of the contract between the State Government and the Peel Health Campus that accreditation be achieved within three years of the commencement of operations. However, the campus has achieved that accreditation well inside that period. The process involves essentially a review by independent experts of the standards of care at the health campus, including continuum of care, safe practice and environment, improving performance, human resources management, leadership and management, and also information management. The fact that this accreditation has been awarded will give the residents of the Peel region, and the wider community, a great deal of confidence in the services provided at the health campus, which are of a very high standard. The aspects on which the surveyors commented and commended the hospital were its education programs, its cleanliness, the food service, and also the cheerfulness and positive attitude of staff. They also commented favourably on the hospital’s infection control program, human resource management, management training course, the unique organisational structure, and also waste management. As I said, it is a credit to all the staff at the Peel Health Campus, and it means that everybody in that region will have a great deal of confidence in the high standard of care at the campus. The SPEAKER: Question time has finished. However, I compliment members and indicate that we had nearly double the number of questions we normally have.
