I refer the Premier to his comments on Radio 6PR yesterday that he was considering a career in Canberra. He said that sometime down the track he was interested in Australia’s role in the world and that of course the federal Parliament is the place for that. (1) Will the Premier indicate when he intends to move to federal politics? (2) If not, will the Premier indicate whether he intends to remain in Western Australian politics long enough to increase police numbers, as he promised; long enough to fix the health system, as he promised; and long enough to reduce taxes, after breaking his promise? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(2) I am very pleased that the Leader of the Opposition has asked that question today. It has given me an opportunity to indicate to the House and to the people of Western Australia that I am very enthusiastic about the prospect of fighting another election on behalf of the great Australian Labor Party. It has given me the opportunity to go to the people of Western Australia and contrast the philosophy and performance of the Labor Party with the reactionary approach of the Liberal Party. I will go into that election campaign advocating the public interest; the Liberal Party will go in advocating privatisation. I will go into that campaign with policies that will protect the Ningaloo Reef; the Liberal Party will go in with policies to destroy the Ningaloo Reef. I will go into that election campaign advocating economic reform; the Liberal Party will go in advocating economic reaction. I will go into that election campaign with a watertight policy that this Government has carried out to protect all old-growth forests in Western Australia; the Liberal Party will go in with a policy to log old-growth forests. The people of Western Australia know the commitment that I have to this State. They know that the State must be changed so that jobs and opportunities will come through to Western Australians in the future. The people of Western Australia understand that the time has come to establish equality under the law for all Western Australians. The people of Western Australia understand that the voting system must provide equality for all voters. I thank the Leader of the Opposition for that question and I reaffirm the enthusiasm I have to go to the Western Australian people at the next election campaign and defend what my Government has done, and to project that again into the future.
