CHARLES STREET BUS BRIDGE
138. Ms E. EVANGEL to the Minister for
Transport:
I refer to the minister's
announcement yesterday that a contract has been awarded for the construction of
the Charles Street bus bridge. Can the minister please advise the house how the
project will benefit commuters and ease congestion in my electorate?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for her continued
interest in public transport initiatives for her community. I am pleased to
advise that the contract has been awarded to York Civil to design and
construct, and begin in April, a new bus bridge that will go from the Perth bus
port across to Charles Street and to then construct bus lanes down to Violet Street.
This will result in over 1 000 buses a day being taken out of Northbridge. More
importantly, this will reduce —
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Girrawheen, why are you doing this?
Mr
D.C. NALDER : It will reduce travel times for commuters in the northern
suburbs by up to six minutes a day during peak time. When we look at this, it
is actually a great benefit to those commuters. There is a lot of talk about
the amount of time it takes to commute in a growing city and what happens with
congestion in our city. Over 30 years of travel time will be removed just by
this initiative alone. We are spending $32 million to save an enormous amount
of travel time.
Ms
R. Saffioti : How many uses of traffic lights are there?
The
SPEAKER : Member for West Swan, I call you to order for the first time. If
you want to ask questions on traffic lights, put your name down.
Mr
D.C. NALDER : A transforming project is about to begin in the member for
West Swan's electorate, with the new freeway for the people of
Ellenbrook, and all she can do is whinge about it and say that the Labor Party
has a fantastic plan. It was not going to do anything about alleviating
transport for the people in the northern suburbs.
The
SPEAKER : Come back to the question, please.
Mr
D.C. NALDER : This is just one of a number of projects that we are
undertaking in this city. We know that other initiatives such as the 950 bus
service to the north are reducing travel times by three to four minutes for
every traveller. We will continue to roll out these projects, despite protests
from those opposite. We are committed to all modes of transport because that
delivers the best outcome for the people of Perth.
