(2) The Selection Criteria stated that:
Network members must be endorsed representatives of peak women's groups and community organisations. In this context a peak body is any organisation which represents a number of community based groups or organisations and is authorised by those groups and organisations to do such representation.
Network members must have previous experience in developing policy or providing services relevant to Western Australia women and have an understanding of contemporary women's issues.
Where the number of candidates who are eligible for membership is greater than the number of positions available, priority will be given to:
representatives of peak bodies whose activities are most relevant to the Office for Women's Policy priority areas and target groups
o appointments that would result in a Network which broadly reflects the diversity of the Western Australia community.
Office for Women's Policy's Priority Areas (Strategic Plan 2006 - 2009):
-Economic Independence
-Safety and Justice
-Leadership and Governance
-Gender Equality
Office for Women's Policy's Target Groups:
-Young women
-Women with disabilities
-Indigenous women
-Lesbian women
-Women on low incomes
-Women from culturally and linguistically diverse communities
-Women living in rural, regional and remote areas of Western Australia
(3) The selection panel included the following members: Ms Gemma Unwin, Manager Community Engagement, Office for Women's Policy, Ms Helen Creed, Executive Director, Office for Women's Policy and Ms Janine Freeman, Senior Community Engagement Officer, Office for Women's Policy.
(4) No.
(5)The recommendation that the nominee from Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia (YACWA) be appointed was substituted with the nominee from Community Legal Centres Association of WA. Community Legal Centres of Western Australia was also considered an acceptable peak body.
At the time the applications were received, advice was received that the Youth Affairs Council nominee was only forwarded as a 'temporary representative,' because the Executive Officer position at YACWA was then vacant. A permanent appointment would be preferable to a temporary representative and would provide greater long-term stability to the Network.
Furthermore, it was noted that the nominee from YACWA was not a young person. It was considered important to ensure that both young people and regional people were adequately represented on the network. The nominee from the Community Legal Centre Association being young woman from a regional centre (Port Hedland) provided this.
In accordance with the selection criteria "
where the number of candidates who are eligible for membership is greater than the number of positions
", the Community Legal Centres Association appointment ensured that the Women's Advisory Network better reflected the target demographic groups and the geographical diversity of the Western Australia community.
