WINE INDUSTRY — CHINA
808. Hon BEN DAWKINS to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Minister for Regional Development:
I refer to the announcement in April
by the minister and the Premier of an additional $500 000 package to promote WA
wines and re-enter the Chinese market, following the removal of wine import
tariffs.
(1) Can the minister tell us what
steps have been taken to achieve these goals?
(2) Prior to the
introduction of tariffs, this market was reportedly worth over $18 million to
the industry and represented nearly 40 per cent of WA's wine exports.
Can the minister advise what progress has been made in reclaiming this market?

The following answer has been
provided by the Minister for Regional Development.
(1) On 21 May
2024, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Wines of Western Australia and the wine industry export
growth partnership steering committee approved a 12-month China re-entry
program, supported by the announced funding. The program includes nine
confirmed activities, including supporting
producers to attend significant in-market promotional events such as Wine
Australia's China Roadshow in August 2024 and ProWine Shanghai
in November 2024, and in-market education to prepare exporters to participate
effectively in the Chinese market.
(2) Progress has
been made in recapturing this market. Wines of Western Australia successfully
executed an in-market activation at Vinexpo Asia in Hong Kong in May 2024 with
12 Western Australian producers from the Margaret River, great southern, Swan
Valley, Geographe and Blackwood Valley wine regions.
