I thank the member
for the question because, of course, it is a great opportunity to talk about
last week's announcement. We are very excited about the announcement and this
is an opportunity to reiterate—

Ms Meredith Hammat: They are very touchy, are they
not?
The announcement
last week was obviously important. We are building, redeveloping and purchasing
three hospitals. The member is right; Peel Health Campus is an important
element of that total package. One of the things that we are very proud about
on this side of the house is the fact that that hospital is now back in public
hands. It is back in public hands after it was privatised by a Liberal–National
government. There has been a project to bring it back into public hands. In
fact, when I was there on the weekend having the opportunity to talk to the
staff—we were there for the media, but some of the senior staff were
there—they were very keen to tell me how much better it is now that it
is in public hands. They are very proud of the work that has been done. They
are very proud of the way that that hospital is servicing the community and
they are very keen to celebrate the fact it is now a public hospital.
Ms Libby Mettam interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Vasse.
Ms Meredith Hammat: We are very proud of that as well.
We were very excited to be there on the weekend to make the announcement about
the brand-new hospital that we will build for Peel Health Campus. I was joined
by the member for Dawesville, the member for Mandurah—over the moon. I
have been inundated with great feedback from the community about that
announcement, as has the Minister for Health Infrastructure, the Treasurer and
the Premier—all of us receiving such positive feedback about that
announcement. It included the redevelopment at Royal Perth Hospital and the
decision to purchase the Mount Lawley hospital.
We are getting on
with the job. We are getting on with the job of delivering health
infrastructure projects for the people of Western Australia. We are very
excited about the work in Peel and I am looking forward to working with the health
infrastructure minister to do that. We will provide further updates as the
project develops. There is one thing members can be sure of—we have
been clear—we will be ready to open that in 2029. The member can be
certain that it will be a hospital that we deliver for the people of Peel.

The Speaker: Members of the opposition!
Ms Meredith Hammat: That is why we have stood up the
$1.5 billion Building Hospitals Fund. It is why we have brought that hospital
back into public hands, so that the people of the Peel region can have
confidence in their fantastic new hospital that only a Labor government will
build for them on that site.
