Hon Nick Goiran inquires about the process and number of reports received by the Minister for Child Protection regarding children in care who became victims of crime while missing or unaccounted for, following a previous answer. The Minister's response clarifies reporting processes but states specific data on victims of crime while missing is not readily available in a reportable format.

Children in care—Victims of crime
481. Hon Nick Goiran to
the minister representing the Minister for Child
Protection:
I refer to the
answer on 14 May 2026 to my question without notice 417 in which the house
was informed that the minister recalls receiving reports this year of children
in care who became victims of crime while missing or unaccounted for.
(1) What is the process by which the minister
received such reports?
(2) How many were received?

I thank the Leader
of the Opposition for some notice of the question. The following response has
been provided by the Minister for Child Protection.
(1)–(2) Question without notice 417 outlined
that in May 2020 regular reporting processes were established to inform the
minister if a child in care had been subject to an incident meeting the
critical incident threshold, as per the Child Protection Guide. The answer also
established that the minister has received such reports this year. Whether
these incidents involve a child being a victim of crime while missing or
unaccounted for is not available in a reportable format. In line with the
procedures outlined in the Child Protection Guide, if a child discloses that
they were a victim of crime while missing or unaccounted for, these reports
will be provided to the Minister for Child Protection by either email or ministerial
briefing. It is important to note that children who have been missing or unaccounted
for may not immediately disclose that they have been a victim of crime.
