732. Ms ANWYL to the Minister for Health:
I refer to the Rural Academic Paediatric Unit in Kalgoorlie/Boulder and ask -
(a) are the paediatricians employed there, Dr Janine Spencer and Dr Christine Jeffries-Stokes direct employees of the Health Department;
(b) does the Health Department directly employ any paediatricians -
(i) in Perth; or
(ii) at any other location?
(c) what is the purpose of the new Paediatric Research Unit at Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital;
(d) when will that be operational;
(e) how many paediatricians are expected to be employed there;
(f) do the said paediatricians already employed at the unit receive accommodation allowance, and if so, how much and on what basis is that paid; and
(g) do the said paediatricians already employed at the unit receive travel allowance, and if so, how much and on what basis is that paid?

(c) As part of the Northern Goldfields Health Service Planning Study of 1998 it was proposed that Regional Centres of Excellence be established. A Regional Paediatric Service has been considered and the current proposal for a cooperative Regional Paediatric Service is for a unique collaboration and partnership between health service providers involved in rural and remote paediatric service delivery, teaching, training and research within the Goldfields region. The objective of the proposed cooperative is to promote multi-disciplinary health service delivery, teaching, training and research which encourages the further development of paediatric services in the region.
(d) There are no confirmed dates for this development which is still at the proposal discussion stage.
(e) Not known at this stage.
(f) Not applicable.
(g) Not applicable.
