INDIAN OCEAN DRIVE - COMPLETION DATE
The submission from Tourism Western Australia to the state infrastructure strategy lists the completion of Indian Ocean Drive as the number one tourism infrastructure priority for all of Western Australia. Specifically, the submission states that Indian Ocean Drive will enable the development of the central coast for tourism by improving access and decreasing travel times from Perth, opening up a range of investment opportunities at Lancelin, Cervantes, Jurien Bay and other coastal towns along the central coast, including Geraldton. The government initially promised that this project would be completed by March 2003. It now appears that this completion date has been pushed back by almost a decade. (1) What is the estimated cost to the tourism industry of the government’s failure to complete the final 65 kilometres of Indian Ocean Drive? (2) What specific action has the government taken to expedite the completion of the vital link road to unlock the millions of dollars of tourism potential for the mid-west? Ms S.M. McHALE

(1)-(2) I thank the member for his question. I will pay tribute to Geraldton, which is now recognised as a tourism destination. Well done. Geraldton used to be a place through which people passed, but it is now a fantastic tourism destination and has a thriving community. Tourism is going well in the mid-west and in Western Australia’s coral coast. I have had a number of meetings with Tourism Western Australia in the mid-west and along the coral coast, and I have been provided with very positive feedback about what is happening in the region. The government is delighted to be working in this area. Several members interjected. Ms S.M. McHALE : This is an important question, and so is the answer. This government is delivering - Treasurer, how much infrastructure? Mr E.S. Ripper : Five billion dollars worth. Ms S.M. McHALE : The government is delivering $5 billion worth of capital infrastructure. The first stage of this road will be completed by 2007. This must be considered in the context of the government’s infrastructure agenda. We have provided $5 billion to Western Australia, and many millions to the mid-west. The SPEAKER : I call the member for Cottesloe to the order for the first time.
