I refer the minister to the Great Southern Community Youth Committee and ask - (1) Is the minister aware that this worthwhile project servicing 12 shires may have to cease to exist because of a cutback in state funding? (2) The group is funded by the Commonwealth anti-corruption commission, which gives $8 000; the shire, which gives $6 000; and the State Government, which previously provided a grant of $5 000 per year. This year the funding by the State Government is $2 500. Will the minister reconsider and provide the group with the extra $2 500 so that it can continue to function, given that youth suicide is on the increase and these services are necessary in country areas for our youth? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) A representative from the Great Southern Community Youth Committee advised the Office of Children and Young People’s Policy on 19 November 2002 that the committee would continue with its service despite any reduction in funding from the Government. (2) The Government provides 22 youth coordinating networks statewide with the same level of funding; that is, $2 500 per annum for secretarial and administrative support to the network. The Great Southern Community Youth Committee is part of this network. This level of funding will remain.
