SCHOOL CROSSWALKS — STAFFING
Given that front-line police spent 1 369 hours in 2009 and 1 407 hours in 2010 on school crossing duties — (1) What means has the minister taken to remedy the situation? (2) Is the minister aware that there are people willing to travel to other suburbs to staff the school crossings, but they have been knocked back on the grounds that there is no money to pay their petrol allowance? (1) The Minister for Police has never been satisfied with the current arrangement regarding the use of front-line police as crossing wardens and has been looking at various options to remedy the situation; these form part of the current cabinet deliberations. (2) A vehicle allowance has and will continue to be paid to staff where there is an identified need.
