MOURAMBINE KARIYARRA — HERITAGE SITES
1223. Hon ROBIN CHAPPLE to the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs:
I refer to a letter dated 5 February 2013 received from the
minister regarding the assessment of Mourambine Kariyarra sites 1 to 14, which
states that the department has not kept an interim register since 2008.
(1) On what date did the interim register cease to be?
(2) Who determined that the interim register would cease to
be?
(3) Are other heritage sites subject to the same level of
protection under the Aboriginal Heritage Act?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice of this question.
(1)–(2)
The interim register was a classification only. The Department of Aboriginal
Affairs' use of the classification ''interim register''
ceased in 2008. The information previously captured under this classification
is now under the category of ''Other heritage places'' in the
Aboriginal heritage inquiry system.
(3) The
Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 protects all Aboriginal sites as defined by
section 5 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972, whether they are known or not,
or on the Register of Aboriginal Sites and Objects.
