I have a supplementary question. Applications by Guy Wallace for support for a carer have been rejected three times. Will the minister give a commitment to have his office investigate this matter to find out why a carer has not been made available? Mr M. McGOWAN

It is easy to come into the Parliament and ask a question like that. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members! Mr M. McGOWAN : As the Leader of the National Party knows, or should know, a combined applications process is overseen by an independent committee, which examines all these issues. That committee is independent of people like me, as it should be. Is the Leader of the National Party suggesting that members of Parliament should become involved in that process? Mr B.J. Grylls : I am suggesting that you should show some interest in this matter as the new minister. Ms K. Hodson-Thomas : It is our role to advocate for people like that. The SPEAKER : Order, members! Mr M. McGOWAN : This debate should not deteriorate to this level. Several members interjected. Mr M. McGOWAN : There is a combined applications process by which people can apply, and they should do so. I will happily meet with Mr Wallace afterwards and take account of his situation, but I will not attempt to direct those people who independently have the obligation and the right to decide these things.
