Question regarding the potential shift of permanent care beds from Wyndham District Hospital to Kununurra, job losses, and the practicality of a distant director of nursing. The Minister denies bed shift from Wyndham, acknowledges job losses, clarifies funding standards, and states no decision on staffing profile.

(1) I refer to Wyndham District Hospital and ask - (a) are any of the permanent care beds being shifted to Kununurra; and (b) if so, will there be a consequent loss of jobs in the kitchen, cleaning, laundry and other areas; and, if so, how many? (2) If the reason for this change is a claim that Wyndham hospital no longer meets the commonwealth criteria for permanent care beds, what commonwealth criteria are specifically not able to be met by Wyndham hospital in the area of permanent care patients? (3) Is it not the Government’s stated policy to have aged/permanent care as close to a patient’s home as possible; if so, why are the people of Wyndham, Kalumburu and Oombulgurri being discriminated against? (4) Is it practical to have a director of nursing located 100 kilometres away in Kununurra when he or she already has one hospital to supervise and the job of director of nursing is very much a hands-on position in country hospitals? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) (a) No. The beds for the new Kununurra aged-care facility will be transferred to Kununurra from Numbala Nunga Nursing Home in Derby as part of the redistribution of licensed aged-care beds across the Kimberley. (b) It is acknowledged that the closure of the Wyndham permanent care unit will result in a loss of jobs at Wyndham hospital. Until the current Wyndham PCU residents make their decision regarding their ongoing care placement, it is unknown how many jobs will be affected. (2) Wyndham hospital is not required to meet the commonwealth aged-care standards, as it is a state funded permanent care unit, not a commonwealth funded nursing home. (3) The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley residents requiring high-residential aged care currently only have access to an accredited nursing home in Derby. The Government is committed to providing accredited high-care aged care beds in the east Kimberley for the first time. The residential beds in Kununurra will be much closer to home for all Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley communities than the existing accredited beds in Derby. (4) No decision has been made on the future staffing profile of Wyndham hospital, including that of the director of nursing position.
