Water Corporation—Renewable energy generation
112. Hon Dr Steve Thomas to the Leader of the House
representing the Minister for Water:
I refer to the
minister's answer to my question without notice 84 asked yesterday 10 March on
the commitment of the Water Corporation to build an additional 400 megawatts of
renewable energy generation.
(1) Given that Water Corporation has only
added 1.2 megawatts of new solar panels, how many solar panels does that mean
it has installed since 2022?
(2) Given that the minister's answer told
us that Water Corporation will contract 1.3 terawatt hours by 2030, does that
figure mean 1.3 terawatt hours per year, or what other timeframe?
(3) Given that 1.3 terawatt hours equates
to 1,300,000 megawatt hours, and that over one year it would equate to 3,562
megawatt hours per day or 148.4 megawatts per hour, how can the minister claim
it will deliver 400 megawatts?
(4) Was the 400 megawatts answer meant to
mean 400 megawatts for part of the day only?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. It is not even Thursday, but
there we go.
(1) It has installed approximately 2,900.
(2) It is an average of 1.3 terawatt
hours per year over the duration of the contract.
(3) The wind farm produces variable
energy throughout the day. The Water Corporation requires an average 1.3 terawatt
hours each year. Depending on the location of the wind farm and type of
turbines used, the installed capacity needed to deliver 1.3 terawatt hours
will vary. The 400-megawatt figure is an estimate. The
final figure to deliver the Water Corporation's requirements will depend on the
specific wind farm selected through the contracting process.
(4) Please refer to the response to (3).
