NORTHBRIDGE
— HOTEL DEVELOPMENT
249. Ms E. EVANGEL to the Minister for Planning:
Before I proceed, I welcome the Castellorizian Ladies
Association (Megisti) of Western Australia and its president, Ms Fay Katris.
Is Monday's The
West Australian report that Northbridge is to get a new hotel and
restaurant at the site of the old National Australia Bank building on William
Street accurate; and, if so, can the minister update the house on this project
and what the hotel will offer visitors to and residents of Perth?

I thank the member for the question. This area of the member
for Perth's electorate is a very important and active —
Mr D.A. Templeman interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Mandurah, I formally call you to order for the first time today.
Mr J.H.D. DAY :
Northbridge and the Perth Cultural Centre precinct are a very active and
important part of not only the member for Perth's electorate, but also
the Perth CBD. The government has had a very deliberate policy since it came
into government in September 2008 to revitalise the area further and improve
amenity and safety. About $35 million has so far been spent through a range of
projects, such as upgrading the Perth Cultural Centre; replacing the facade on
the Art Gallery of Western Australia; demolishing the old Francis Street Museum
building, which had to be vacated in 2003 and which will be the site of Western
Australia's new Museum; and refurbishing the heritage-listed buildings
along William Street. I was very pleased last Sunday to announce, together with
the developers and representatives of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority,
the development of a 74-room boutique hotel and restaurant at the site of the
old National Bank building, a 60-year-old building on William Street, not far
from the intersection with James Street. This is certainly a very welcome
addition for the area. It will provide increased numbers of hotel beds in
Perth, which is something that is very much needed, and it will also very much
add to the amenity of the Northbridge area by providing accommodation, a new
restaurant and a new rooftop bar. Entrance to the restaurant will be off
William Street, while the entrance to the hotel itself will be from the James
Street mall area and the Cultural Centre Precinct, although the two parts of
the hotel and restaurant development will be interlinked.
The developers are the same people
who were responsible for the development of Little Creatures Brewery in
Fremantle, which has been a very successful operation and has really provided
its own active precinct in that area. Construction of the project is expected
to commence later this year and be completed by around the end of 2014. I am
very pleased that the government's policy of revitalising and improving
the amenity and safety of the Northbridge area is delivering returns such as
this. These sorts of developments will very much add positively to the
Northbridge area.
