I refer to a public workshop that was held in Bindoon on 16 February 2011, in which Bauxite Resources Limited (BRL) stated, that their proposed bauxite project in the Chittering area would consume 150 megalitres of water per 2 million tonnes per annum of bauxite mined, and ask -
(1) Is the statement from BRL, that the Chittering bauxite project would consume 150 megalitres per two million tonnes per annum of bauxite mined, consistent with the Minister’s understanding of the BRL proposal?
(2) If no to (1), what amount of water does the Minister understand BRL intends to use per million tonnes per annum of bauxite mined?
(3) Is the Minister aware that BRL stated at the public workshop, that the water would not be sourced from the Chittering area?
(4) If yes to (3), is this the Minister’s understanding with regards to water to be used for the BRL project?
(5) If yes to (3) or (4), -
(a) what is the proposed source of the water; and
(b) how would it be transported?

(1-5) The Environmental Protection Authority is carrying out a formal environmental assessment of Bauxite Resources Limited's proposed bauxite mining project in the Chittering area. The proposal is being assessed through a Public Environmental Review process. The Environmental Protection Authority has advised the Minister for Environment that the environmental assessment process is still at an early stage and that Bauxite Resources Limited has not yet provided specific information on the volume of water required for the proposal or where it is proposed to be sourced from. The Environmental Protection Authority has also advised that in its referral Bauxite Resources Limited stated that more detailed water supply studies would be conducted as part of the environmental assessment. The Environmental Protection Authority will require the company to provide such information as part of the company's Public Environmental Review document.
