The following material was incorporated - (1-2) In 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, not one extra police officer was employed and the authorised strength of the Police Service remained static at 4,698. Since being elected, the Gallop Government has increased the strength of the Police Service. At February 2001 the authorised strength was 4698 and the actual strength was 4873. At 30 September 2004 the authorised strength was 4903 and the actual strength was 4917. By the end of 2004 the Gallop Government will have further increased the authorised sworn strength of the Police Service to 4948 or an extra 250 officers. The Police Service advise as at 30 September 2004 the authorised sworn strength (FTEs) of East Metropolitan District was 233, North West Metropolitan 267, South Metropolitan 394, South East Metropolitan 426, West Metropolitan 301, Central Metropolitan 451, Great Southern 171, South West 211, Peel 122, Wheatbelt 150, Kimberley 144, Pilbara 169, Goldfields-Esperance 202, and MidWest-Gascoyne 205. The actual sworn strengths (FTEs) were 226.3, 266.15, 385.61, 410.99, 297.77, 420.05, 170.85, 209.66, 120.95, 147.94, 138.85, 160.19, 193.52, and 199.26 respectively. With the additional 205 officers already provided by the Gallop Government the Commissioner of Police has increased the authorised strength of numerous operational units including Commercial Crime, Crime Services, Major Crime, Organised Crime, State Protection, the East Metropolitan District, South East Metropolitan District, West Metropolitan District, South Metropolitan, Peel District, South West District, Goldfields Esperance District, Kimberley District, and Mid West Gascoyne District and established the highly visible and mobile Regional Operations Group. In addition last week the Government reopened the Wickham Police Station.
