Minister for Police and Emergency Services
Response time
29 days
(1) - (34) The responses required for these questions would take a significant amount of time to collate. The Commissioner of Police has advised he is not prepared to divert valuable resources away from core policing activities to provide a response. However the Commissioner has offered to hold a personal briefing session to discuss these and other issues with the Leader of the Opposition and other members of his team that he would like to accompany him.
(35) During the 32 months from January 2005 to August 2007, 5378 police officers took 153,520 days sick and carers leave. The total cost to the WA Police would take a significant amount of resources to collate due to various backfill arrangements and allowances paid. However basing the cost on the average salary of a police officer, the cost of sick and carers leave from January 2005 to August 2007 is estimated at around $35 million.
The sick leave figures may change subject to the processing of outstanding applications.

Data has been provided for financial years 2000-2001 to 2006-2007. Incident reports for July and August 2007 are still being completed and data has not yet been verified.
Data is segmented according to the ABS 'major cities' remoteness category in line with FESA's reporting standards. Data is for incidents in the metropolitan area, including Mandurah, where a career fire service has provided the primary response.
Response times are measured from the time that the call is received to the time that the first responding crew arrives on scene.
It should be noted that the information provided may vary from published data as a result of retrospective data entry and ongoing data verification.
