CENTRAL LAW COURTS — FLOODING EVENT
793. Hon TJORN SIBMA to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Attorney General:
I refer to the recent flooding event
at the Central Law Courts.
(1) What has been the full impact of
the flood on the scheduling of cases across all jurisdictions statewide?
(2) How long was the statewide audiovisual system
compromised and how long will it be before its functionality is fully
restored?
(3) What interim arrangements
are presently enacted to cope with physically compromised courtrooms, and when
will matters return to normal?
(4) What lessons have been learnt by
the state government in relation to this unfortunate episode?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by
the Attorney General.
(1) The impact of this event, which occurred on 17 June
2024, is under assessment by the Department of Justice.
(2) The videoconferencing system was
operational statewide as of yesterday, 19 June 2024.
(3) The
Department of Justice is doing all it can to minimise disruption and
inconvenience to court users, including making arrangements to list matters at
other suitable court locations in the Perth central business district. The
family violence service that operates out of Perth Magistrates Court is
providing advice to clients from the registry at the District Court building
and overnight arrest in-custody matters are being heard in the Northbridge Magistrates Court. The Department of Justice
continues to work on resolving the issue as soon as practicable.
