TAXIS —
LONDON-STYLE CABS — MECHANICAL ISSUES
448. Ms R. SAFFIOTI to the
Minister for Transport:
I have a supplementary question. Is the minister telling the
house today that he is not aware of any other safety concerns and issues
raised, such as problems with the speedometer and transmission?

AnswerView source ↗

I did hear the other night the program that touched on some
of those issues. The primary issue around safety was the brakes. We have tested
those brakes. The enhancement program is being undertaken separately; the
Department of Transport is not undertaking that. These are private vehicles
that were brought into the country. Other issues have been mentioned and we are
continuing to look at this. This is a trial where we are trying —
Ms R. Saffioti :
There are cars on the road and safety issues that the minister is not aware of.
The SPEAKER : The member for West Swan has been given a
supplementary, which the minister is answering. If she wants, she can ask
another question further down the track.
Mr D.C. NALDER : These cars meet Australian safety
standards. I think that summarises it. If we want to argue about Australian
safety standards, that is a broader issue than these London-style taxicabs.
