DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL — UPGRADE
147. Hon SUE ELLERY to the
Minister for Education:
I refer to the 2012 promise to the residents of Yanchep that
the Barnett government would provide $10.5 million to upgrade Yanchep District
High School and the subsequent reneging on that promise in the 2013–14
budget. Does the minister still acknowledge that the school is in dire need of
an upgrade to its facilities and will he reinstate that commitment to provide
$10.5 million for an upgrade?

I thank the honourable member for the question. Yes, I do
acknowledge the fact that Yanchep District High School is in serious need of an
upgrade. Having said that, those northern suburbs are experiencing an enormous
amount of growth, as we have seen with the opening of stage 1 of Butler College
at the beginning of last year and the opening of stage 2, I think, at the end
of this year. Yanchep falls within that northern catchment area. At the moment
we are looking at the medium term viability of Yanchep District High School and
whether it is worthwhile resolving those issues internally or developing a
senior high school. Ultimately, we will do one thing or the other. We will
either refurbish Yanchep or we will have to look at—this is a matter of
public record—the possibility of another senior high school, and that
is what we are doing at the moment.
