STATE BUDGET 2012–13 — SECONDARY
SCHOOLS — YEAR 7 STUDENTS
169. Mr P. PAPALIA to the Minister for Education:
I refer to the minister's announcement that year 7s
will move to high school from 2015 and the fact that Comet Bay College, for
example, is forecast to receive an additional 500 students above its current
number of 1 200 when it opens in 2015.
(1) Will all
the infrastructure needs for schools such as Comet Bay College and every other
high school around the state be considered in this year's budget to
enable them time to plan, design, tender and build the necessary additions
before 2015?
(2) Will the
budget take into account details like the fact that Comet Bay College was
originally designed to be only a middle school and therefore will need an
extensive expansion of basic facilities such as to its gymnasium, change rooms
and toilets in addition to new classrooms?
(3) Are there
any planned primary schools that will not be constructed in order to fund the
conversion of year 7s into high school?

I thank the member for Warnbro, but he has been here long enough to know that
he has just asked me a question about what is in the budget. If he is patient,
he will find out on the day the budget is presented by the Treasurer. There is
an assumption of some sort in his question that somehow we are not planning for
year 7s. I can assure him that we are.
