I
refer to the recent price rise for weekday burials at the South Hedland
Cemetery in the Town of Port Hedland from $1100 to $3500 and ask: (a) Is
the Minister aware of the considerable fee rise; (b) When
was the Minister made aware of the fee rise; (c) Has
the Minister or anyone from his department contacted
the Town of Port Hedland over the price rise: (i) If yes, what was the message sent to the Town; and (ii) What
was the response from the Town; (d) Will
the Minister invoke section 52 (4) of the Cemeteries Act 1986 and order the Town of Port Hedland to amend or revoke the burial fee rise: (i) When
will the Minister invoke the section; and (e) Will
the Minister consider applying uniform burial fees across WA local governments: (i) If
not, why not; (ii) If yes, is the department forming a policy on the matter; (iii) Which parties have contributed to the policy; and (iv) When will the policy be implemented?

(c) I have written to the Town of Port Hedland.
(i) I asked the Town to reduce the fees voluntarily or demonstrate why the fees should remain so high.
(ii) The Town has indicated that they are now reviewing the fees and intend to reduce them for the next financial year.
