QuestionView source ↗

I refer to the policy of the Department of Health to refuse to allow the Derby Health Service to sign a lease with the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley for the continuing use of the shire’s child and maternal health centre building in Derby. (1) Is the minister or his department aware of this policy? (2) If not, why not? (3) If yes to (1), what is the reason for this policy? (4) If yes to (1), is the minister willing to direct his department to seek to negotiate a compromise with the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley that would allow the Derby Health Service to arrange for continued use of the shire’s child and maternal health centre building in Derby? (5) If not, why not? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) It is the Department of Health’s policy not to enter into formal leasing agreements with local government that will involve the Department of Health taking responsibility for maintenance costs of child health clinics. (2) Not applicable. (3) The Government’s policy on infant health centres outlines shared responsibilities between local shires and the Department of Health. Under this policy, local government is responsible for the provision and maintenance of child health centres, and the Department of Health is responsible for the provision of staff. (4) There is nothing to prevent the negotiation of a lease for child health clinics that does not involve the department taking responsibility for building maintenance. (5) Not applicable.
