Environment—South West—Cape
to Cape
1008. Hon Neil Thomson to
the Minister for the Environment:
I refer to the South
West of our state and the government's conservation activity in the region.
(1) What works are currently proposed to protect areas
of the Cape to Cape Track, the Aquarium Yallingup, Injidup Natural Spa and
Quinninup Falls from further erosion over the coming summer months?
(2) When will maintenance work, including arum
lily control and weed spraying in high-value heritage areas such as Yallingup,
be carried out?
(3) Is there a reason that this work has not
already commenced?
(4) Are there any plans to secure the area around
Injidup Natural Spa with a boardwalk, handrail, lookout or other
infrastructure?

I thank the member
for some notice of the question. I note it was asked on 22 October, so the
answer was correct at that time.
(1) The state government has committed $3.65 million
to support major upgrades to the Cape to Cape Track and campsites, including
sections near the Aquarium and Injidup Natural Spa. The Department of
Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions undertakes maintenance of visitor
tracks to manage erosion in line with identified priorities and available resources.
(2) In October 2024, the state government
allocated $368,000 over three years to support the Nature Conservation Margaret
River Region's Arum Lily Blitz campaign. DBCA and Nature Conservation Margaret
River Region undertake ongoing arum lily control across Leeuwin-Naturaliste
National Park and nearby reserves.
(3) Not applicable.
(4) Visitor safety at Injidup Natural Spa is
managed through signage and community engagement. Any future infrastructure,
such as boardwalks or lookouts, will be considered through DBCA's planning and
prioritisation processes.
