RECREATIONAL FISHING — MANAGEMENT PACKAGE FOR DEMERSAL SCALEFISH 699. Hon BRUCE DONALDSON to the Minister for Fisheries: I assume that the minister’s recent announcement of the recreational fishing package to protect existing fish stocks, especially category 1 species, was based on scientific advice. (1) Who provided this advice? (2) What benchmark of fish stocks has been established for the monitoring to occur over the next 18 months? (3) How will exploitation of category 1 fish stocks be measured during this time? (4) Is the minister considering changing the voluntary logbooks for the recreational boat sector to a compulsory requirement to better monitor fish stocks for the review in 18 months? Hon JON FORD

AnswerView source ↗

I thank Hon Bruce Donaldson for the question. (1) It was the Department of Fisheries. (2) The objective of the fisheries management arrangements being implemented for both the recreational and commercial sectors is to reduce the 2005-06 catch of demersal scalefish on the west coast by at least 50 per cent. That is the benchmark. (3) In recognition of the need for additional research information, the Western Australian government has committed an additional $5.3 million over the next four years for biological research and catch monitoring. (4) A voluntary logbook program may provide important trend information on recreational catches. This data will be used in conjunction with catch survey and stock structure information to monitor the recovery of the fishery. Consideration will be given to introducing a compulsory logbook program if participation in the voluntary program is found to be insufficient to meet the research requirements.
