VIOLENT CRIME — NORTHBRIDGE
158. Dr D.J. HONEY to the Minister for Police:
I
refer to the horrific events on Sunday, 20 March that left two women in
hospital, adding another serious assault to the 360 in Northbridge this financial year alone. What action is the
minister taking to better protect Western Australians from violent
crime?

I thank the member for the question
because it gives me an opportunity to reflect a little on the police response
to the incident to which the member
referred. It was a horrific attack, a horrific assault, captured on CCTV.
Interestingly , the response by police evidences just how much additional
resourcing and support has been provided to the Western Australia Police Force
under this government and how effective the policing is. The incident was
observed on CCTV in the City of Perth camera room at 1.50 am and 15 seconds.
Immediately, a call for police to respond was broadcast. The arrival of the
first police occurred at 1.50 am and 48 seconds, 33 seconds after the
broadcast. Thirteen units arrived and the two individuals were arrested within
33 seconds. That is an extraordinary response and it should give great comfort
to anyone across Western Australia—not only those in Northbridge—that
the Western Australia Police Force responds rapidly and effectively. It was an
extraordinary response and it reflects the efforts that are being made by Western
Australia police, particularly in Northbridge in recent times, to tackle
antisocial behaviour. The government has supported an additional 100 police
officers, who have been tasked to the Perth
district by the Commissioner of Police; he dictates where police resources are
located, not the government , not
politicians, not members of the opposition or anyone else. Members can see that
there are adequate police numbers in Northbridge as evidenced by that
response.
There is always more to be done; we
can always look for other responses and methods that might improve the outcomes, but that was a horrific assault and,
fortunately, the individuals responsible—they are the ones responsible ;
those two men are the ones responsible—have been arrested and charged,
and that is a great outcome.
