Can the minister confirm that the federal Government has reduced its contribution to the port of Broome extension and has offered only $3.3 million towards the project? Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice of this question. She has been a staunch supporter of Broome port and the very necessary extension. The Leader of the National Party has claimed to be a great supporter of the port. The member for Carine has visited the port. The SPEAKER: If members want to have a conversation across the Chamber, they should go outside. They should not have it during question time. Mr E.S. Ripper: I apologise, Mr Speaker. Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: Thank you, Mr Speaker. We heard the unfortunate news yesterday that the federal Government has decided to reduce the recommended funding for the Broome jetty extension project. The State Government earlier this year made a commitment to share the funding with the federal Government for this important project. Like the previous Government, we identified that this project needed to be a joint federal and state project. Government agencies have put in place a funding package of $6.5 million. We approached the federal Government and asked for matching funds through the sustainable regions program. Some $12 million was allocated for the Kimberley. Mr John Anderson, the Deputy Prime Minister, set up the Kimberley Sustainable Regions Advisory Committee. He asked it to advise him on how to spend the money. The committee made a clear recommendation that $5 million should be allocated and invested in the port of Broome. The member for Avon has so frequently pontificated in this place that it is so important to the future of the Kimberley and so important for our national security and border protection! However, notwithstanding the work that has been done by the Kimberley Sustainable Regions Advisory Committee, the general enthusiasm and excitement in the Kimberley that finally the port project would go ahead, the State Government making a contribution and the Kimberley Sustainable Regions Advisory Committee recommending that $5 million go into the pot - we could have made it work for that sum of money - the federal Government has decided to cut the funding back to $3.3 million. Even that $3.3 million has a clause on it; namely, it is $3.3 million including GST, which effectively means that it is a grant of $3 million. The State Government is very disappointed that the federal Government, once again, has failed to take up the challenge to invest in infrastructure in the north of this State. The same issue applies in your electorate, Mr Speaker, of Burrup. The State Government is investing $137 million in infrastructure in the Burrup, yet not one cent has this State received from the federal Government. When I asked Hon Barry Haase, the federal member for Kalgoorlie, whether he supported the State Government’s application to invest in Australia and get some money for the Burrup, he said that he does not support development in the Burrup as he wants it to go to the Maitland estate. That is the representation that the people of the Kimberley and the Pilbara have from their federal member. Unfortunately, the federal member for Kalgoorlie and the National Party, which has the capacity to access Mr Anderson, have badly let down the State Government and the people of the west Kimberley.
