INDIAN OCEAN DRIVE - COMPLETION
The Leader of the House would be aware of the Premier’s announcement today that Indian Ocean Drive will be completed in or by 2011, with construction commencing in 2008 at an estimated cost of $110 million, which the Premier announced has been allocated. (1) Why the three-year time frame to build the road? (2) What are the expected levels of expenditure on the road in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011? Hon KIM CHANCE

AnswerView source ↗

(1) I imagine there is a three-year time scale because that is the time that Main Roads has advised it will take to construct the road. (2) I do not know what the annual levels of spending will be. I would have to be advised by Main Roads but if the honourable member wishes, I will find out and report that to him. Hon Bruce Donaldson : I would like that, yes. Hon KIM CHANCE : However, I imagine that Main Roads would have provided the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure with annual funding requirements some time ago. Generally, those funding requirements are taken in 2007 dollars and would be expressed right through to the completion date in 2007 dollars. I will attempt to get hold of that information, but can I join Hon Bruce Donaldson - Hon Bruce Donaldson : There’s a bloke over there, too. Hon KIM CHANCE : - and Hon Murray Criddle. Hon Murray Criddle : It was going to cost only $34 million when we were going to build it! Hon KIM CHANCE : We will build one that is three times as good, obviously. Can I join all members of the Agricultural Region in welcoming this announcement. Yes, it has been a long time coming but now that an announcement on the funding has finally been made, I think we can all be happy about that and look forward to the day when Indian Ocean Drive is completed. The PRESIDENT : I formed the view that when that last question was asked, it was asked of the Leader of the House in a representative capacity, but I got the impression that the Leader of the House was not giving an answer that the Premier had provided to him. However, perhaps it is getting close to Christmas and this is the fourth week in a row of sitting and, therefore, my judgement is not what it otherwise would be.
