FACEY GROUP 926. Hon B.K. DONALDSON to the Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries: The Facey Group is a farmer-initiated group that has evolved from the Wickepin Land Conservation District Committee and the Lake Toolibin Catchment Group. Its aims are to confront sustainability issues rather than just resource management issues. It has support from the Shire of Wickepin and the Department of Agriculture. (1) Was the Facey Group given a verbal agreement of funding of $50 000 each year for three years to assist with the executive officer’s salary, field days and to trial new systems and methods? (2) When will the minister indicate in writing to the Facey Group whether this funding has been put in place and guaranteed? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(2) The Facey Group wrote to me requesting support in May this year to which I responded by providing $2 200 in June. I also met with the Facey Group to hear its plans for addressing sustainability in the Shire of Wickepin and additional requests for support. At the meeting, I offered to investigate what additional funds might be available to assist the group with its activities. Subsequently, the Director General of the Department of Agriculture met with the group and offered funds in the order of $20 000 to assist with its establishment. The department committed the funds because of the consistency of the group’s objectives with those of the Department of Agriculture in integrating sustainable agricultural production and conservation. The department is keen to work with the group to identify opportunities for collaborative research and development through department programs such as Woolpro and Topcrop. It has also provided support for the group’s executive officer through the provision of technical support for field days and extension activities, the provision of support in preparing submissions to bodies such as the Grains Research and Development Corporation, and the use of facilities at the department’s Narrogin district office. The group has been provided with written confirmation from the department about these commitments. The group’s executive officer is 50 per cent funded by the Commonwealth Government through the Natural Heritage Trust. The group has also received $4 815 from the progress rural grants scheme to undertake business and strategic planning.
