I thank Hon Anthony Fels for some notice of this question. (1) For the past six months I have been in discussion with the meat processors about the impact of the skills shortages on both farmers and feedlotters. Together we have explored the option of bringing skilled meat workers from processors that have closed operations in other states and from overseas. The Minister for Small Business; Peel and the South West; Minister Assisting the Minister for Education and Training is continuing to seek ways to overcome the current skills shortages at Western Australia’s meat processing plants through discussions with plant operators and management, the unions and the federal Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs. (2) I ask that this question be referred to the Minister Assisting the Minister for Education and Training.
